    A passport is a travel document, usually the right of every person but issued to its citizens by a national government, which certifies the identity and nationality of its holder primarily for the purpose of international travel.

    Online Passport Application

    The application for online passport can be made online by visiting the official Passport Seva website. The Ministry of External Affairs has now made all passport applications online, so if you want to renew or apply for a new passport, you will have to go through the online application process.

    How to apply for Online Passport?

    When wishing to apply for an online passport, the applicant has to follow some steps. The steps involved are described in detail below:

    Step 1: Passport Services

    Go to the official website of Passport Seva (link) and click on ‘Y APPLY’ section.

    If you are an existing user or you have already logged in and registered your name on the passport service website, you can log in using the user ID and password.
    If you are a first time user, you will have to register and create an account by name. To register, you need to create your account by following the steps given below:

    After creating a new account, click on ‘Register Now’ under the ‘New User’ tab.

    Enter the login ID and password. Enter the captcha code and click ‘Register’.

    Step 2: Select application type

    After logging in, you have to select the service related to the given options. You can choose to apply for one:
    Fresh passport/passport reissue
    Diplomatic Passport / Official Passport
    Police Clearance Certificate (PCC)
    Identity certificate

    Step 3: Passport Application Form Filling

    Both online or offline steps can be followed to fill the application form. To fill the application form offline, follow the steps given below:
    Download the application form.
    Download related form based on your application form:
    Fresh / Re-application
    Police permit certificate
    Diplomat / Officer
    Identity certificate
    Fill the application e-form and click on the form ‘Upload e-form’ link.
    Upload the filled application form.
    You can also fill the application form online and submit it. You can partially fill the form and complete the process at a later date. It is worth checking the form once before submitting it.

    Step 4: Schedule an appointment.

    After filling and submitting the form, you have to schedule the appointment at your nearest Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or the concerned passport authority.

    Appointment booking can be done as described below:

    Go to ‘Applicant Home’ page and click on Save / Submitted application.

    Details of the submitted application form will be displayed. Select the ARN of the form you submitted.

    Click on ‘Pay and Schedule Appointments’ from the given options.
    Next, choose the mode of payment from the given two, ie. Online payment and invoice payment.
    Note: If paying for immediate appointments, the online passport fee is the same as a regular passport fee. The remaining amount is to be paid to PSK on the appointment date.

    If you are paying online, you can book an appointment immediately. If you choose to pay by invoice, you will need to do the following:
    Take the challan to the SBI branch and pay the required amount in cash. (Note: This can be done only after 3 hours of invoice generation, which is valid for 85 days.)
    Next, collect a copy of the challan from the receiving bank personnel.
    The bank takes 2 days to verify the ARN details given on the invoice.
    Successful payment of fees will be displayed after verification of the website, where the applicant can ‘track payment status’. An email update is also sent.

    Fixed appointment in passport

    On the ‘Salary and Schedule Appointments’ page, select the PSK of your choice.

    Choose a convenient slot from the available dates mentioned. There, the applicant is required to select PSK based on the available date of passport.

    Confirm your appointment slot by entering a captcha code.
    Next, choose ‘Salary and Book Placement’
    Application details such as ARN, name, type of application, amount to be paid, contact number and appointment date will be displayed.
    If you have chosen to pay online, you will be sent to the payment gateway.
    On successful completion of payment, you will receive appointment confirmation and an appointment number. An SMS with details will be sent to your mobile number. Application print a copy of that receipt. All PSKs now accept SMS for appointment proof which you have received on your mobile number.

    If multiple payments are made for a single appointment / application / ARN, the additional amount will be refunded by the RPO. Passport appointment can be rescheduled twice within one year from the date of original appointment. However, if you missed the appointment, you were canceling the appointment.

    How to apply online diplomatic passport / official passport.

    Diplomatic or official passports are issued to persons who hold diplomatic status or are deputed by the Government of India to travel abroad on official duty. This document can also be used as proof of address and identity. Applications for diplomatic and official passports are generally entertained only in the Consular, Passport and Visa (CPV) Division, Patiala House, New Delhi. However, you can also choose to apply in the attached passport office at the applicant’s current address.

    The clues given below will help guide the applicants applying online for official or diplomatic passports –

    • Go to the official website of Passport Seva Kendra and click on the official Register Now link.
    • On doing so, they will be given an ID that should be used to login to the Passport Seva online portal.
    • After this, applicants have to click on the link ‘Attic Diplomat for Diplomatic Passport’.
    • After doing this, the required form has to be downloaded, filled, and submitted along with the necessary documentary proof.

    Passport Seva Kendra -PSK

    How to register a passport.

    Ever since the online facility was introduced, the process related to passport registration and then passport login has become easier.

    Step by step procedure for passport registration.

    1. Go to the official passport service website of the government, www.passportindia.gov.in.
    2. On the left pane, there are four options in different colors – green, orange, blue and yellow.
    3. Click on the orange button, which says new user? register now.
    4. A form opens which has to be filled.
    5. By default, radio button is clicked in Passport Office. However, for official / diplomatic passport in consular, select option “CPV Delhi”.
    6. For the field “Passport Office”, select the city name according to the residential address.
    7. In the “Name” field, enter the first name and middle name.
    8. In the next field, enter the last / last name.
    9. Enter the date of birth in the format: DD / MM / YYYY.
    10. Enter the email address.
    11. The next part involves processing the login ID. For this, either a new ID can be created or the login ID can be the same as the email ID.
    12. Enter the password, which must contain at least one uppercase alphabet (A-Z) or lowercase alphabet (A-Z) and a number (0-9). The combination must have a minimum of 8 characters and a maximum of 14 characters.
    13. Re-enter password for confirmation.
    14. Select a hint question from the drop-down menu and enter your answer in the corresponding box.
    15. Enter captcha code and click on Register button.

    1. For skilled / semi-skilled persons

    In the case of skilled / semi-skilled persons who have signed direct contracts with a foreign employer and are not protected by Recruitment Agents (RAs), recognized by the Protector of Emigrants (POE), the following Need to submit for PCC:

    How to apply for PCC online for passport? (How to apply for PCC online for passport)
    Online PCC application submission is a simple process. Following steps are given below:

    Register on the Passport Seva Portal and login to your account.
    Click on Apply for Police Clearance Certificate link.
    Fill the form and submit it.
    Next, see the Saved / Submitted Application option on your screen and click on the option called Pay & Schedule Appointment.

    You must compulsory payment online. Payment can be made through any credit / debit card, internet banking of SBI and associate banks or through SBI bank challan.

    Now, by clicking on the relevant option, print the application receipt and note down the application reference number or appointment number, Be present on the day of appointment with all necessary documents.

    Alternatively, the above process can also be done by first downloading an e-form from the website, filling it and saving it in XML format. You need to follow the same steps given above, except for the part where you fill the online application form. Here, you can upload the already filled XML file directly.     A passport is an official document that ensures smooth immigration to another country. Because it serves as an address and identity proof it also doubles as an authentic official document from which we can avail various government and private services.


    While the passport application process is a complete one, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has arranged for speedy delivery of passports under the ‘Tatkal Scheme’. Known as Tatkal Passport, applicants are required to travel abroad immediately and can get their passport within a few days.

    The steps to apply for Tatkal Passport are briefly listed as shown below.

    Change of address in passport

    Documents required to change address in passport.

    The following documents have to be submitted while applying for change of address in passport:

    1. Original Old Passport.
    2. Copy of your online application.
    3. Copy of payment receipt or invoice receipt
    4. Self-attested copy of first two and last two pages.
    5. Self-attested copy of ECR ​​/ Non-ECR page.
    6. Self-attested copy of the page of observation made by the passport issuing authority, if any.
    7. Self-attested copy of the validity extension page, if any, in respect of short validity passport.
    8. Current address proof (any)
    9. Election Commission photo / voter ID card
    10. Aadhar Card
    11. electricity bill
    12. water bill
    13. Proof of gas connection
    14. Telephone bill (mobile or landline)
    15. Registered Rent Agreement
    16. Income tax assessment order
    17. Passport copy of husband (first and last page with family details). The applicant’s current address must match the address mentioned in the husband’s passport.
    18. Certificate from employers of reputed companies on letterhead
    19. Photo passbook for running bank account (scheduled private sector Indian banks, scheduled public sector banks and regional rural banks only)
